Show and Tell Friday: Vingnette

Vignette "Fleurs en Papier"

"In my fields of paper flowers and candy clouds of lullaby
I lie inside myself for hours and watch my purple sky fly over me..."
- Evanescence

This was my first attempt at creating a vignette. Being nervous and a little unsure about it, I decided to start small - a tiny corner of my vanity. I didn't realize it, but I had little treasures around my home that would be perfect: fabric and paper flowers (that I often wear in my hair), my bottle of Chanel Chance perfume, the vintage apothacary jar that holds my Witch Hazel, and a beautiful Paris themed trinket box (a gift from a dear friend). The creation of my first vignette was inspired by Victoria Magazine...

I bought my first issue of Victoria Magazine in September 1999. I was standing in the checkout line at my local grocery store daydreaming, contemplating getting serious about my returning to Paris after four years. The line was long - sigh - I looked up and there it was on the 'endcap.' While I had noticed Victoria's gorgeous covers, had flipped through it a few times, I'd never been interested enough to actually buy one. What made this time the time? The issue's title: Discover the Heart of France. It was a sign, or I took it as such. By the time I made it through that checkout line two things were apparent: I knew that I was going to Paris in the very near future and I wanted to check out this magazine a bit further.

That September 1999 issue was a revelation. Everything, every page, every article, every photograph, even the ads were lush, romantic and utterly unabashedly feminine. But most importantly, Victoria's stated raison d'etre was to encourage all women to bring the lush, colorful, romantic and utterly unabashedly feminine into your home and into your life. Wow, I think that I'm going to have to pull out my V collection and start reading - I need some re-inspiration. And I'm going to have to blog about it, soon.

Anyway, I've since created many vignettes, of varying shapes, sizes, and themes, in every room in my home. I'm sure that they'll make another appearance in my Show and Tell Friday.

Have a wonderful weekend ;-)

  1. Aw, Victoria. I was a charter subscriber. Literally cried when they shut it down. (Even called them and asked why.) Rejoiced when it returned. That mag has inspired me in so many ways.

  2. I called them too! When they re-launched the editors invited me to their relaunch-gala in Dallas. It was incredible and inspiring to be surrounded by like-minded 'Victoria' women for an entire weekend. In fact, a few of the women I met encouraged me to start making my Paris Bracelets - the rest, as they say is history.

Sadly, the new Victoria is nothing like the original. Oh I still pick up an issue, now and again, hoping that the old magic wil return...
