Changements (Changes, an Update)

Kinky, Curly, Natural Me - Happy to be Nappy!

"[Sistahs] have the same spiral in our hair as electricity, tornadoes, whirlwinds, DNA, galaxies!" - Nekhena Evans

In April I blogged about my decision to 'return to my roots' and no longer put chemicals in my hair (Time to Make a Change). Well, I'm finally able - and willing ;-) - to give you the update I promised.

These past 4 months have been quite an adventure, hairwise. The 1st thing I did was to stop using harsh chemicals on my hair - cold turkey. 2nd, I had a major trim - about 3 inches - to get rid of most of my overprocessed hair. Now all I had to do was figure out how to handle my mop of gloriously kinky hair.

One of the first things I discovered, during this journey, is that my hair absolutely cannot handle heat of any kind. That means no: hair dryers, flat irons, curling irons, or hot rollers. No matter what ethnicity or hair texture, ladies you know how challenging such a discovery is. How do you curl your hair without any heat, even naturally curly hair in-transition, cold turkey from chemicals? - EEK! After some trial and error I found my personal solution: air dry and a Straw Set.

I absolutely love my natural hair. And I'm so glad to be 'back.' It's only been a month of 'full time natural,' but from day one I felt powerful, unique and beautiful. And the response had been universally amazingly positive. I think that I will be fabulousity-ready for Paris this Fall. So, onward! And I'll keep you updated.

  1. What, no heat???? You look beautiful anyway you slice it, Temple! I'm too much in denial to give up hair coloring right now, but the day may come...

  4. I like it! It looks very pretty and goes with your bohemian vibe. My hair is the same way. Can't hold a curl for longer than 10 minutes. But I love my hair. And yes, it's chemical free. Although, after many years of dreadlocks, I'm now back to doing press 'n curl.
